An Evernote Workshop (6): Images and Icons

Have you set up your Evernote notebooks? Perhaps you’ve started exploring, playing around with the options. I wonder if you’ve discovered how to insert images and icons into your notes. Have you thought about what kinds of images you can use to enhance your notebooks? These are the things we’re going to discuss in this Evernote Workshop post!

How do we insert images into our notes?

There are a few options.

We can…

  • Upload images from our computer
  • Copy and paste images from the Internet
  • Clip images from the Internet
  • Insert photos and scanned images using a mobile device such as a camera

Uploading images from the computer

Inserting an image into a note

Click on the paperclip icon in the toolbar at the top of a note. Choose an image from your computer to insert.

We could insert photos of:

  • outings such as picnics and trips to a museum
  • celebrations such as birthdays
  • unschool learning experience such as science experiments, cooking, piano lessons, maths in real life, handicrafts…

These are only a few examples. We’ll talk more about the possibilities in future posts!

Resizing and rotating an image

If you’d like to resize an image after inserting it into a note, click on it. A blue border will appear. Drag one of the corners towards the centre of the image to make it smaller. Drag the corner in the opposite direction to restore its size.

As you can see in the above screenshot, I have inserted a large image into the note. Each note does have a size limit. This limit varies according to which Evernote account you have:

25 MB (Basic)

50 MB (Plus)

200 MB (Premium and Business)

I have a Premium account with a large note size allowance so I rarely worry about resizing my images before inserting them into my notes. If you read my last Evernote Workshop post, you will know that large images need to be reduced before printing notebooks to paper.

We can also rotate images by right-clicking on them and choosing either ‘Rotate Clockwise’ or Rotate Counterclockwise’.

Copying and pasting images from the Internet

You could download images from the Internet, save them on your computer, and then upload them to Evernote using the paperclip icon. However, it’s easier to copy and paste an image directly into a note.

I copy and paste lots of images such as book and DVD covers, photos from movies, paintings that we like…

The size of the image in your note will, of course, depend on its original size. Many images are available online in multiple sizes. Choose the one most appropriate to your needs.

Clipping images from the Internet

Images can be clipped using the Evernote web clipper:

Evernote Web Clipper is a simple extension for your web browser that lets you capture full-page articles, images, selected text, important emails, and any web page that inspires you.

I like to use the web clipper when capturing images of videos or online games. I choose the screenshot option.

If you choose the article or full page one, the video or game image will be missing. It will be replaced by a blank rectangle.

Youtube videos can be captured, complete with an image, using the Youtube option.

Inserting images using a mobile device

Photos can be inserted into notes very quickly and easily using a phone or tablet. Sometimes I take photos and insert them into notes using my phone. Later, I might open my computer and edit the notes.

Scanned images can also be added to notes. You can scan documents or artworks using a scanning app such as Camscanner. The images can be shared to Evernote.

Icons

Icons can be used instead of photos. They are good for activities which are repeated regularly.

I have icons for treadmill running, gym workouts, piano practices, choir practices… I even have one for sick days!

I also use icons to record how many times my girls do a particular activity each week. The above screenshot shows that Gemma-Rose ran on the treadmill 5 times during the week beginning 16 May 2016. Of course, I could have made 5 separate notes instead of using the star icons.

Free icons are available online. When you find ones you like, you could download them to your computer, and save them in a specially labelled icon file. Icons are inserted into notes in the same way as other images. (Use the paperclip icon.)

Once an icon has been inserted into a note, it can be copied and pasted within a note and even between notes.

The above photos of Gemma-Rose and Imogen have been inserted into notes with coloured backgrounds. I’m going to show you how to make coloured backgrounds in a future post.

As usual, if you have any questions, I’ll try to answer them!

So what kind of images have you recently inserted into your Evernote notebooks? Do you take photos with your phone or do you prefer to upload photos from your computer? And what about coloured backgrounds? Should I make some template notes in different colours to share with you?
