An Evernote Workshop (7): 50 Coloured Background Note Templates (to download)

Today, I have something I hope you’re going to like: coloured background templates for Evernote notes! I have made 50 templates for you to download and use in your notebooks.

How to download a template

  • Click on a coloured square

  • The link will take you to this screen:

  • Click on VIEW IN EVERNOTE

This screen will appear:

  • Choose which notebook you’d like to save the template to
  • Click on SAVE

Easy!

Update

For some mysterious reason, the links attached to the colour images stopped working. I have added the links you need under each colour gallery.

A Templates Notebook

Maybe you’d like to create a templates notebook so that you can use each template over and over again. When you need a coloured background, open this notebook, choose a template, and then copy it into another notebook ready for use.

Like Some More Colours?

What do you think of the colours I’ve chosen? Would you like some more? I’m going to make more templates another day so watch out for them. And if you’d like to make your own coloured background templates, I’m going to show you how to do that in another post!

So what do you think? Will you use these templates? Perhaps the lighter ones will be good for dark text. (You could use white text on the darker ones.) They might liven up a personal journal or diary. How about using the templates as photo backgrounds? I’d love to hear your own ideas!

PS: Don’t you love the names of the colours?! The names come from the Wikipedia article, List of colours (compact).

Please Note

I have tested these templates with Evernote for Windows Desktop and Evernote web version. They worked fine. I don’t have a Mac computer so I can’t test them with the Evernote for Mac Desktop version!

Update 1

Here’s a screenshot of a diary entry using one of the coloured backgrounds. If you read the words, you’ll see it isn’t one of my entries. It was written by Beatrix Potter!

  1. Sue, great post. I copied several colors into my Evernote database.
I’d love to see you add a post that explains how you created the backgrounds so I could try to make a couple myself.
Note. “Tickle Me Pink” doesn’t work.

    • JIm,

I’m glad you liked my post. Thanks for letting me know about the Tickle Me Pink error. I forgot to add the Evernote link to the gallery! It’s all fixed.

Yes, I could write a post explaining how I made these background notes. I meant to do that a while ago. Life gets busy!

      Thank you for stopping by!

      • Sue, thanks for responding.

I also meant to say that, “Yes”, I did like the names you gave to the colors. Very creative and apropos.

I wrote and published a couple books. It never seemed like I ever got enough feedback from my readers (even if it was critical). So, I thought you’d like to get some feedback.

It looks like you have a great family and you are a very active, creative type person. I hope all is going well with you.

For your information, I live in Twinsburg, Ohio, a city of about 18,000, 25 miles southeast of Cleveland. Twinsburg is home the annual 3-day Twins Festival which draws 3,000-5,000 pairs of twins (and triplets) from all over the world. I’d bet some have come from Australia.

        • Jim,

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I love learning new things and trying out ideas. My children are the same and we often work together on projects.

You are so right about feedback. We can sometimes receive very little. I’m sure this isn’t indicative of the value of our work – readers sometimes are too busy or don’t even think to leave a comment – but some encouraging words can make a lot of difference. It’s good to know that the work we do is useful, isn’t it?

I should have given credit to Wikipedia for the colour names. I just assumed these were the standard names for the colours. I will add a note to my post with a link to explain where the names came from. I’m glad you mentioned them so I can fix up this oversight!

I hadn’t heard about the Twinsburg Festival. How interesting. I shall do some googling to find out more! I live south of Sydney on the edge of the bush.

I see from your profile that you are a grief counsellor and an Evernote trainer. I am passionate about both these areas. I’ve written many grief stories about the experience of losing a son. And I’m always sharing Evernote tips with fellow homeschoolers!

It’s been good to chat. Thank you so much for your comments. I do appreciate your feedback on my post!

          • Oh, Sue. I’m so sorry to hear that you lost a son. – – – Yes, my wife and I lost a son, too. 4 years ago at the age of 38, he came down with a rare form of cancer and died in 4 quick months. As you well know, you never really get over losing a child. I hope/presume the presence of your daughters helps you move along.

Where did you find on the Internet that I was a grief counselor? I just checked again. It’s not in my Linked-In profile.

            Jim

            • Jim,

Losing children is so very painful. I’m sorry to hear you are intimate with this kind of suffering. You must miss your son very much. You didn’t have much time to prepare for his death. (But would we ever be prepared?) 4 quick months. I imagine that was an overwhelmingly difficult time for your family.

My son died a day after his birth. I had five months to prepare because we knew our baby had a problem – a diaphragmatic hernia – before he was born. He wasn’t given much chance of survival after birth but, of course, we hoped the doctors would be able to save him. Living without hope wasn’t an option.

Yes, my other children are a great blessing and they reminded me during that dark time that life can still be joyful. They did indeed keep me moving along.

I found out you are a grief counsellor from your Gravatar profile. If you hover over your profile picture on this post, you’ll see a few of your personal details.

I’m sure that you are making a huge difference to other bereaved people as you are counselling them. They will appreciate having someone to walk side by side with them through the pain. I used to feel very alone and almost crazy because of the grief. At that time, I didn’t have anyone who understood what I was going through.

Maybe counselling has helped with your own grief? Our experiences may be very painful, but they help us grow in compassion and enable us to help others, don’t they? Something good comes out of our suffering. My son wasn’t here with us for very long but his story isn’t over. He continues to affect people’s lives as I share my experiences with other parents who have lost children. Maybe your son lives on in this way too.

Thank you for sharing your grief story.

  2. Oh, Sue. You have my deep, deep sympathy on having had to carry a baby for 5 months, knowing the likely outcome.

Yes, the loss of a son has made me more compassionate. I now recognize that many (most?) people are carrying something that is causing them a lot of anxiety (or grief), even if they don’t show it. – – – While something good has come out of the loss of our son, as my wife says, “it wasn’t worth it”.

I am an Evernote devotee, going on 5 years now. It’s constantly open on my laptop and I add / modify notes 4-8 times a day. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, I frequently still pick up on new ideas about it at https://discussion.evernote.com/.

    • Jim,

Oh yes, nothing can replace our sons. I do understand your wife’s words, “It wasn’t worth it.” Four years is such a short time, not that time matters. The pain of losing a child will endure forever. I’m sorry for your loss.

I have Evernote open on my computer all the time too! Thank you for the link. I will check it out at regular intervals. I’m always looking for new ideas to share with my readers!

  3. Hello, there!
I would like to say I’d really loved the templates. I’ve trying to find background colors for evernote notes for a while now. So… Thank you!
I just have one question! I’m having some trouble using it. When I write and change lines, the tex overlaps the previous line. I’m not sure if I’m explaining this right. Sorry, English is not my native language…

    • Hi Livia!

I’m glad you like the coloured templates, but I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble using them. I’m not sure what the problem is. I don’t have the same issue when I’m using them. I just added a screenshot of a diary entry written on a pink background to this post. If you take a look at it, you’ll see that each line of text is spaced perfectly. Does the problem only happen when you use my templates? Or has it occurred at other times? I did some googling to see if I could find a solution. It seems other Evernote users have experienced overlapping text, but I couldn’t find anything current.

I’m sorry I couldn’t help you with your problem, but if I do find out anything, I’ll add another comment!

      btw, your English is excellent!

  4. Hi Sue,
Thank you for creating such pretty colours for use as an evernote background, however I saved it to my Evernote and was unable to type on the coloured part, did I miss something in the instructions? Please are you able to explain how to do this?
    Many thanks
    Carol

  5. Hi Carol,

I’m sorry you’re having a problem using my templates. I just asked a couple of my daughters to download a template or two to Evernote on their computers to test them out. They then tried typing on them. Everything worked fine.

Are you clicking onto the template – the coloured part – before you start typing? If you just start typing, nothing happens. The flashing cursor at the beginning of the first line needs to be visible. I know the words at the top of the template say ‘drag files here or just start typing’ but that’s not exactly true. Perhaps you can try clicking onto the template before typing. I hope this works for you!

I’m glad you like the colours. Thank you for letting me know!

  6. Hi Sue,

Thanks for getting back to me. When I first downloaded it I was using my I pad, so I went on my PC and tried it from there, however it still wouldn’t work. So I went onto Evernote via google and it worked. So I’m guessing this is the only way it will work. On my iPad and on my desktop Evernote it won’t work. I’m not complaining as I love what you have done, I would prefer a coloured background for my work, I just need to understand what platform your templates work with!

    Many thank Carol

    • Carol,

I’m glad you found one platform that works with my templates!

I did some more testing… The coloured templates seem to work with both our desktop version of Evernote and the web version. I’m using Evernote for Windows. I’m wondering if you are using Evernote for Mac on your desktop. The templates don’t show up on my iPhone app. Maybe there is a problem using my templates with Apple products?

I appreciate your feedback. Thank you for stopping by!

      • Hi Sue,

No it won’t work on my desktop, I’ve tried every which way and yes it’s a Mac! I just wish it would work on my iPad……..has to have something to do with apple! Most annoying!

        Carol

        • Carol,

You’re using a Mac? I now know my templates won’t work on Apple products. Thank you so much for returning to let me know. I don’t know what the problem is. If I had a Mac computer I would try and remake the templates using it. Unfortunately, I don’t have one.

It’s been good to chat even though I wasn’t able to solve your problem. Enjoy the weekend!

          • Hi Sue,

I know Apple sucks sometimes! Let me know if you ever invent something for a Mac platform, I would even be willing to pay!

            Keep up your awesome work!

            Carol

            • Carol,

I’ll remember you if I do ever get the chance to work on a Mac. I’m going to buy an iPad. I’ll have a play around with the templates on it and see if I can get them to work.

Thanks for your comment. I’ve enjoyed our conversation!

  7. On my MacBook Pro (2013) your coloured backgrounds do work!

Just saying after reading Carol Riordan’s comment that they don’t work on her Mac.

I’m on OSX High Sierra, using Evernote 6.13.3 (downloaded on Evernote’s website, not the Apple App Store). For those who want to compare their device and app version.

    • Fie Design,

I’m so glad to hear my coloured backgrounds work on your MacBook Pro. Since I wrote this post, I’ve bought an iPhone and iPad Pro and the backgrounds also work on these devices. Thank you for stopping by!

  8. Hi,
I LOVE THESE! I am also happy to say that they work perfectly on my mac. Have you done a post on how we can make our own colours? I suffer from dyslexia and this is honestly a gift from god for me, I use coloured paper whenever I write and now I can do that when I type! I particuallry like a bright blue or bright yellow. I have tried downloading the Naples yellow on here but the link takes me to another colour. So I would love to be able to make my own. These are truly something that could help many people like me who are studying with dyslexia.

    • Faye,

I’m so pleased you like my coloured backgrounds. I thought they might make our Evernote notes attractive, but I didn’t realise the colours are actually helpful. That’s wonderful!

I’m sorry I added the wrong link to the Naples Yellow template. I’ve fixed it!

I was going to write a post about making templates from scratch. But the online ENML editor which I used to make my first template has been removed. I can modify my original template to make as many colours as I want, but I can’t send anyone to the editor to make their own.

I just did some googling and I’ve found another ENML editor. I shall try it out and if I’m successful, I’ll share how I made a coloured background. In the meantime, I am quite happy to make some more coloured templates for you. Just send me the colour codes – maybe one for bright blue! – and I’ll make the backgrounds and then add them to my templates notebook for sharing. It will only take me a few mnutes to make them. It’s not a lot of work.

Also, I might be able to share my original template which you could modify easily. I’ll think more about this option.

      It’s been good to chat!

  9. Hello,
I would like to thank you for the work you do to keep us informed.
I have a quick question about transferring background colors to Evernote. I tried with the latest version of Evernote Windows 10 both the web version and the one provided in the Windows 10 store (April 2021). Could you please tell me how to do it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bernard

    • Bernard,

Click onto a link for a colour and an Evernote page should open with a button saying ‘save copy to Evernote’. Press or click onto this button and it will take you to a page that says ‘Success! The note has been added to your Evernote account.’ Have you tried this? Hasn’t this worked? If you’re having problems saving the background notes, I don’t really know the reason. I tried this with my iPad and I have a Mac. I used to use a Windows computer. If I discover what could be wrong, I’ll add another comment.
