Christian Unschooling: My Reason for Writing

Enjoying coffee in a favourite cafe with my love, Andy

Years ago, as I hit ‘publish’ on my first blog, I wanted to shout, “Here I am, world!” I imagined an earthquake-sized energy wave passing through the Internet and people saying, “What just happened?” They’d discover my blog and say, “How did we survive without Sue Elvis? The Internet will never be the same again.” Readers would flock to my site to read my stories, which I thought were very clever and irresistibly interesting. They’d want to buy my books. I was going to be someone important.

Of course, life online didn’t change just because Sue Elvis started blogging. But that no longer worries me because I’ve changed since those exciting early days of blogging. I no longer want to jump up and down, trying to get anyone’s attention. I don’t want to research ways to become more persuasive. I don’t want to write carefully crafted bios that attract a lot of attention.

All I want to do is write. Mostly, I’d like to write about love. Our hearts yearn for love, don’t they? We need love like we need air. More accurately, we all need love Himself: God.

God is my reason for being. He conquered my heart which was hardened against the Church. He gave me everything that I have: my husband, Andy, our eight children, our Australian home near the bush, my life overflowing with joy. He’s with me in my sorrows and the challenges I face. He forgives me and brings good out of my mistakes. He fills up the emptiness that I once thought could be filled with followers and fame. God gives my life meaning.

I pray. I ponder. I write. I try to work things out. And I share my thoughts, wrapped up in stories.

These days, I often say to myself, “Why should anyone want to read these stories Surely it’s arrogant to think anyone is interested in what I have to say?” But despite my hesitation, I continue to write. I can’t help it. It’s what I do. And anyway, hiding away and not writing is the easy way out. We have to be brave, don’t we? We should share openly and honestly so we can encourage and help each other.

I’ve recorded many podcasts, and I’ve written hundreds of blog posts, six books, and two editions of a newsletter about Christian unschooling. And now I’m publishing a series of Christian unschooling posts on my blog.

Without a doubt, these stories will all contain a huge dose of love.
