A Million Love Stories: 02

We’ve had some sad news since my last Christian unschooling newsletter: Nora has cancer. Soon we’ll lose our beautiful dog.

Because of Nora, I’ve been pondering loss. Why is it so painful? The answer to that question is love. If we didn’t love, we wouldn’t care, we wouldn’t grieve.

So love causes pain, but it’s also the source of our joy. It’s what keeps us going. It’s the meaning of life.

But is parenting with love an effective way to raise children? Or is love the easy option? Do we need to stand firm and discipline our children with strict rules and punishments when they break them to ensure they know right from wrong?

Sometimes it’s difficult for us to decide what to do. We choose love because that seems right, then doubts plague us. Conflicting thoughts whizz round our minds, threatening to drive us crazy. Could journaling help? Examining our lives? How about a Saturday examen? Would that sort things out?

Could we design a tiny experiment to try out an idea that we’re wondering about and see what happens? Is the idea right? Or should it be rejected?
