Taking the Unschooling Yeti for a Test Drive

Did you hear about my Yeti? My husband Andy gave it to me for Christmas. When I unwrapped my gift, I was so excited. A new mic!

For more than a week, my Yeti mic stayed in its box. And then the other day, I said to my teenage daughter Sophie, “Shall we take the Yeti for a test drive? How about we record a podcast together?”

Sophie set up the mic. She chose the interview setting and then we sat on opposite sides of the table, the mic between us, hoping that both of our voices would be picked up equally.

And then after we’d finished recording our conversation, I immediately started editing it. I was eager to find out whether my Yeti mic had made a difference to the sound quality of my podcast.

“How does it sound, Mum?”

“It sounds good! Both our voices are loud and clear!”

The crack of thunder that rolled across the sky towards the end of the episode was also loud and clear. And so was the pathetic barking of our scared dog. And, for a few minutes, somewhere in the middle, I could hear the hum of my computer that was protesting because of the heat.

Yes, Sophie and I recorded our podcast on a very warm day. We felt even hotter because we had to close the windows in my recording studio (bedroom!) and couldn’t use the ceiling fan. But we survived. Actually, we enjoyed chatting together so much that we almost forgot about how hot and sticky we were. Until we finished recording and got up from our chairs. Maybe you’ll listen to episode 145 to find out what Sophie said right at the end!

Here are a few of the things we talk about in this week’s episode: Taking the Unschooling Yeti for a Test Drive?

  • Do I have an online persona?
  • How we can capture our life stories
