Do You Know Who You Are?

Do you know who you are?

That might seem like a silly question. We’ve lived with ourselves for years. Surely we know ourselves better than anyone else in the world? But just recently, I’ve been wondering if there are things about myself that I haven’t been able to see.

One thing that has occurred to me is that I’m a perfectionist. It really is quite obvious when I think about it. It’s the reason that I have notebooks full of ideas that never get published as blog posts. It takes me forever to get my words into a state where I feel happy to share them. And even after I do hit ‘publish’, I often return to a post to change a word here and there because I feel dissatisfied with what I’ve written. Sometimes I even return blog posts to draft form because I decide they’re not worth sharing after all. Being a perfectionist is a big nuisance. Imagine if I were happy to jot down my latest thoughts and then publish them immediately. My blogging life would be a whole lot easier.

I talk about being a perfectionist and lots more in this week’s podcast, episode 90:

  • Is it important we know who we are?
  • Is our self-image affected by other people’s opinions and expectations?
  • Why didn’t I fulfil my early gold star potential?
  • How can we help our kids become who they are meant to be?
  • Why did my daughter Sophie laugh when I told her the results of an IQ test I took?
  • What did our Authorised Person from the education department think of my Evernote homeschool records when she came for a recent registration visit?
  • Does my family have a secret identity?
  • What’s my latest big project? Will you want to be involved?
  • Will there be an episode 91?

  1. Thank you for recording a new podcast, Sue! I enjoyed listening in the car yesterday as I drove to Wales for Mother’s Day. I’m not surprised that you’re an INFJ. That’s my type! I’ve never been totally sure whether I’m an INFJ or an INFP, and I once read an interesting article on how INFJs are really Ps and INFPs are really Js – just to confuse things further! (I just found it – http://personalityjunkie.com/03/judging-perceiving-ijs-ips/) Darren Rowse is an INFP, so quite similar to us which is again not surprising!

I’ve kept a journal on and off since I was 11. I have hampers-full of them up in our attic. For a long time I resisted going digital because I was worried I’d lose it. But in the end I decided touchtyping was much faster. I just make sure to make regular back-ups!

I’m looking forward to digging into your Evernote series. You’re so generous to share your learning – it must take you a long time putting together the screencasts etc. In particular I’m looking forward to learning how to use coloured backgrounds.

Thank you very much for linking to my blog, too. 🙂 Have a wonderful week, Sue!

    • Lucinda,

I’m not surprised you are an INFJ as well. We are kindred spirit friends. We understand each other! Thank you for the link to the article. Yes, it was interesting. If I haven’t forgotten the main points – I read it yesterday – it seems that Js are more perfectionist than Ps. Ps like to get things finished, out of the way, even if it means not doing them as well as one could. Have I got that right? Oh my, I’d like to get more things to the completed stage, but I find it so hard.

Would you believe I have got my digital journal back-ups in a muddle? Just like my physical notebooks, I keep buying and using new external hard drives or flash drives and I forget what I have put where.

Yes, coloured backgrounds might make an attractive extra to our Evernote notebooks. I’m hoping to share those instructions soon. I published my first screencast tutorial video and accompanying blog post today. It was on a basic topic. Soon we’ll get to the fun stuff!

Lucinda, you are always such an encouraging friend. Thank you!

    • Kim,

“… unfold your podcast offerings…” Oh, I do love the image those words conjure up! I’m so glad you think of me as a friend as you listen. Thank you!
